Design of locally buckling cold-formed steel built-up columns formed by unlipped channel sections

چکیده

This study proposes a design procedure for the local buckling strength prediction of cold-formed steel (CFS) built-up I and box section columns based on Effective Width Method (EWM) Direct Strength (DSM). For this, ultimate sections made two plain unlipped channels is obtained using finite element (FE) analysis. First, some compression tests are performed to validate FE models. Then, detailed parametric validated models conducted with wide range slenderness (1??l?3) where ?l square root ratio yield stress cross-section. The results show that equal sum its section’ strength, whereas sections, can be 20%–25% higher as nesting will alter characteristics. EWM (with k factor approach) authors’ DSM predict strengths well but conservative sections. issue resolved in this paper by proposing simple cross-sectional model constrained deformations section. When proposed were used procedures, predicted matched those present numerical study. In addition, provided more accurate predictions than existing presented literature columns.

Comparative Study on Distortional Buckling Strength of Cold-Formed Steel Lipped Channel Sections

Usage of cold formed steel structural components for buildings and structures is gaining popularity in India for a decade. Hot rolled steel member behaviour and design are well developed, whereas the cold formed steel member behaviour and design is not developed fully compared to the rest of the world. The Indian code for cold-formed steel design, IS 801 was revised during 1975, which is in lin...

Simulation of conventional cold-formed steel sections formed from Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS)

The objective of this paper is to explore the potential impact of the use of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) to form traditional cold-formed steel structural members. In this study, shell finite element models are constructed, and geometric and material nonlinear collapse analysis performed, on simulated lipped channel cross-section cold-formed steel members roll-formed from AHSS. AHSS shee...

Local and Distortional Buckling of Cold-Formed Steel Members

Laminar structures have a high post-buckling strength reserve. Cold-formed steel profiles can be taken as a set of thin plate elements. Therefore it is necessary to design this type of profiles taking into account that reserve of strength in post-local buckling modes of failure. The method normally used to design this type of structures is based on the Effective Width concept. The Effective Wid...

Distortional Buckling Tests on Cold-Formed Steel Beams

Failure in cold-formed steel beams is generally initiated by one of three instabilities: local, distortional, or lateral-torsional buckling. For cold-formed steel joists, purlins, or girts, when the compression flange is not restrained by attachment to sheathing or paneling, distortional buckling may be the predominant failure mode. Experimental results on cold-formed steel beams with unrestrai...

Local Buckling Tests on Cold-Formed Steel Beams

C and Z sections are two of the most common cold-formed steel shapes in use today. Accurate prediction of the bending performance of these sections is important for reliable and efficient cold-formed steel structures. Recent analytical work has highlighted discontinuities and inconsistencies in the American Iron and Steel Institute ~AISI! and Canadian Standards Association ~S136! design provisi...
